My Cinematic Alphabet: In Depth - D

Welcome to the fourth installment of the series where I take a deeper look at the films the top films that didn't make it onto my final Cinematic Alphabet but that are well worthy of praise. For those of you following the series apologies for the delay but from now on it will return to being a weekly post. So settle down as So I Saw This Film takes a look at My Cinematic Alphabet: In Depth. This week it's D:

Dances With Wolves

Dances With Wolves is one of those films that astounded me all the way through. And that statement is coming from someone who before wasn't a particular fan of Kevin Costner. It is an absolute must watch for any film fan; a beautifully cinematic landscape throughout combined with an emotional storyline and many heart warming moments. The ending is kind of lame but it is still one of my favourite films and a must see.

District 9

District 9 provides a brilliant mix of a hilarious script, outstanding CGI effects combined with great live-action scenes and a great storyline. For some reason I found it one of the funniest films I've seen when I first saw it despite the fact that it's basically an alien based thriller. I can't wait for the sequel to arrive but wonder how they can possibly improve on the first one.

The Darjeeling Limited

A fantastically indie travel film starring Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman as three brothers travelling across India by train in a spiritual quest of sorts. The storyline really speaks to anyone like me who dream of travelling on the Indian railways and I think therein lies the reason for my enjoyment. Easily my favourite Wilson film and my second favourite Brody film after The Pianist.

Disturbia

I very much doubt this will have made it onto many lists of this type but again the storyline of the film spoke to me. I think the combination of a home alone teenager and the spying element would speak to any Male's teenage side. I'm personally a fan of Shia LaBeouf but to enjoy this film you really have to be.

Baldwin And Eisenberg Tipped For New Woody Allen Film

Woody Allen's new comedy film which will be set in Rome is said to have found its first major star. Deadline have reported that Alec Baldwin has all but signed up to the project which will make it the first time Allen and Baldwin have teamed up since 1990 with 'Alice'. The film will follow Baldwin's coming appearance in the Warner Bros. film 'Rock Of Ages' in an adaptation of the Broadway musical alongside stars such as Tom Cruise. And what of 'The Social Network' star Jesse Eisenberg? Yes, he too may be starring the film and is in line to take the lead role. The new fan favourite's involvement is as yet just a rumour but he could just bag it.

Allen's current project 'Midnight In Paris', a romantic comedy that centre's on the French capital, is set to be released in May of this year and will star Owen Wilson and Michael Sheen among others. Allen seems to be continuing his run of writing/directing at least one film each year. With that amount of traffic it's no surprise some of them have gone unappreciated so only time will tell if this latest film will get the critics in a positive mood. If Eisenberg does become involved however the film would gain a level of prestige that comes with a hot young star joining a cast.

Preview: Cars 2 (2011)

With the release of 'Cars 2' only four months away I thought it prudent to take a look a the new feature looking to build upon the success of 'Cars' in 2006. It seems incredible to me that it took Disney Pixar this long to create an animation featuring talking cars because the characters were so loveable. I especially loved the rusty old hick van Mater who will be making a comeback.There is also a whole host of stars to look forward to including Owen Wilson, Michael Keaton, Emily Mortimer  and surprising new edition, Michael Caine.

The film follows the friendship of star Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry The Cable Guy) as they head overseas to compete in the World Grand-Prix and determine the world's fastest car. The film also follows a side story with Mater who reportedly gets embroiled in international espionage! This sounds like comedy gold to me. Mater is torn between helping McQueen and a secret spy mission that will take him through Europe and to Japan. With a ton of new characters and a storyline that sounds far fetched but exciting, I doubt whether this will be another forgettable Disney sequel. So put the release date, 24th June 2011, in your diary and prepare for some laughs.
